Projekt Beschreibung

Jenkins Slate Masters, Inc.—a Pennsylvania-based roofing firm specializing in slate and copper work—was selected to restore the roof of a landmark 1928 windmill in Seneca Falls, New York. The structure, long considered a local icon, had deteriorated significantly and required a complete roof replacement executed with precision, historical sensitivity, and expert craftsmanship. Craftsmanship Highlights Among the most technically complex aspects of the project was the fabrication and installation of pleated copper panels—a traditional method where copper is folded in an accordion-like fashion to conform to curved and elliptical surfaces without relying on solder or sealants. These were strategically used: • Near the windmill shaft • Along the curved lower roof section Another significant challenge was stretching and fabricating the elongated copper diamonds at the top junction of the dome. These custom pieces required careful shaping and alignment to fit seamlessly at the point where multiple roof surfaces converged. Precision was essential to achieve both water-tightness and a visually cohesive finish. All components were hand-fabricated and installed on-site by Jenkins Slate Masters’ craftsmen: Orion Jenkins, Viktor Dymchevskyi, Dominic Nave, and Ben Powell. The project was completed with the installation of a custom copper finial, which visually unified the copper work and emphasized the structure’s historic character. Project Significance This restoration exemplifies the enduring value of traditional roofing techniques in preserving architectural heritage. It also highlights the specialized craftsmanship required to execute complex slate and copper work with historical accuracy. The project reflects Jenkins Slate Masters, Inc.’s dedication to technical excellence, authenticity, and the artistry of historic restoration.

Materials & Methods The restored roof showcases a blend of premium materials and traditional techniques, including: • Vermont unfading green slate, supplied by Newmont Slate Company • 20-ounce copper double-lock standing seam roofing • Custom-fabricated 20-ounce copper diamond panels on the dome • Traditional 20-ounce, half-round copper gutters and downspouts A key challenge—and defining feature—of the project was the windmill’s eight-sided, octagonal form, which included three entirely different roof surfaces, each demanding a unique approach. This complexity required not only deep material knowledge but also highly adaptive techniques from the Jenkins team.
