Secretary General
Role of the President
The President represents the IFD and maintains contact on its behalf with the heads of other international organisations, particularly in the skilled trades. Otherwise the IFD is represented jointly by two board members. The Secretary General holds authority under § 30 of the German Civil Code for day-to-day administration.
Term of office
The term of office is three years, beginning at the end of the congress at which the election takes place. The Board remains in office until the next Board is duly appointed. Re-election is possible up to three times – twelve years in total. No two or more members may come from the same full member organisation.
Responsibilities
Duties of the Board
- implements the resolutions of the General Assembly
- decides on the admission of partner members and scientific members
- decides on cooperation with other organisations, associations and companies
- may establish and supervise the IFD’s own commercial entities, subject to approval by the General Assembly
- represents the IFD in other organisations and acts as supervisory board for its own entities
- recommends necessary budget adjustments on the proposal of the Secretary General
- decides on the budgets of the individual areas of work
- represents the IFD at meetings, congresses and conferences of other organisations
- decides on the scope and content of research work and studies

The Board decides how responsibilities are distributed among its members. The following portfolios are filled:
Marketing
External presence of the federation and communication with the sector.
Education and training
Young talent, the World Championship and training provision.
Finance, economics, statistics
Budget, membership fees and industry figures.
Technology
Guidelines, commissions and work on standards.
General Secretariat
Duties of the Secretary General
The Secretary General ensures that the resolutions of the IFD bodies are carried out, prepares meetings and conferences, and runs day-to-day business together with the President. As treasurer, they submit the draft budget, administer the funds and report to the General Assembly on the financial situation.
